Accessing the onscreen keyboard
When you need to input text in android phone, a onscreen keyboard is used. The keyboard appears on the bottom part of the touchscreen . it will show up every time your phone demands text as input ,like email, writing for various apps.
Above figure shows onscreen keyboard in alphabetic mode. You see keys from A – Z in lower case. Pressing the shift key turns them to upper case. A delete key is used to erase.
You can use the physical keyboard to perform typing in addition to onscreen keyboard.
Choosing another keyboard
Some phones may have keyboard varieties in addition to the Google keyboard shown in Figure
To view which types of keyboards might be available, follow these steps –
on the home screen touch the apps icon to show up all the apps
choose settings app and open it
choose language and input
This will show all available keyboards. To use a keyboard exclusively, choose it from the list and remove the check marks by other keyboards.
Tip - You can quickly access keyboard settings by long-pressing the Microphone key on the keyboard. Choose the Settings key that appears to display the Input Options menu. From that menu, choose Google Keyboard SettingsHow to type using onscreen keyboard
The onscreen keyboard is very easy to follow. Touch a letter to produce that character. It works same as computer keyboard. As you begin typing the key you touch is highlighted to show you what exactly you typing. To type in all caps, press the shift key twice, after you press the shift key may appear highlighted or a colored line or dot will be there indicating that shift lock is on. Pressing the shift key again will turn off the caps all. First of all you should type slowly to avoid mistakes. You can always press the delete key to erase.
Accessing special characters
You are not limited to typing onscreen symbols only but you have many more symbols available.
The Number and Symbol key may be labeled ?123 or 12# Touching this key gives you access to additional keyboard layouts.
To return to the standard alpha keyboard,touch the ABC key.
Android phone supports a predictive text feature, which displays words the phone thinks you are about to type , after typing few words of a letter known letter may appear, you can touch that letter to type automatically.
To ensure that the predictive text has been activated on your phone, follow these steps –
on home screen touch apps icon to display all apps
find and open the settings app
choose language and input
touch setting icon on google keyboard
ensure to check ‘show suggestions’
if you type a word that phone doesn’t recognize, you can add the new word to phones dictionary. The phone has a dictionary and spell check option.
Adding gesture typing
You can also use gesture typing , to enable it check enable gesture typing in google keyboard setting explained previously. Use gesture typing by dragging your fingers over letters on the keyboard.
Google Voice Typing
Android phones have amazing capability to interpret utterances as text. To activate this feature known as Google voice typing follow these steps –
on home screen touch apps icon to show up all apps
find and open setting app
choose language and input
check the item Google voice input
When this feature becomes active you can see a microphone icon on the keyboard.you can dictate text to phone, touching the microphone key you can start talking with your phone.when you touch the keyboard change to special window and tap to speak appears then you can speak directly.

The text you speak appears as you speak. To pause, touch the Tap to Pause text . for using the keyboard, touch the Keyboard icon just to the left of the Microphone icon, shown in Figure.

Tip – the better your dictation, better the results. You can not edit text using voice. Dicatation works for most of the languages with internet.Text Editing
Moving the cursor -
the cursor is blinking vertical line where text appear. Moving cursor is to move it to right spot where you want to type,edit, paste the text. To move the cursor, simply touch the spot on the text where you want to place the cursor. For precision a cursor tab appears below the text, this tab may be moved with your finger around the text.you may see a pop-up with a paste or copy command, touch to copy or paste on that position of the text.
Selecting text –
Selecting text –
this process is just like selecting text in msword, you mark the start and end of the block. The text that is highlighted gets selected to copy or paste. To do this a contextual action bar appears at the top of screen.
After selecting text,you can delete it by touching the delete key, you may replace text by typing something new,cut or copy text
Cutting, copying, and pasting text –
this works just like your word processor. After selecting choose the proper command from contextual bar. Cut o copied text on phone is stored on clipboard. You can use this text to paste anywhere you want. A good way is to touch the paste button above the cursor tab. Some phones have a clipboard app which lets you use,review and select previously cut , copied text and images.
